Judaica Jewelry

Judaica Jewelry is jewelry based on Jewish symbols. We would like to describe a variety of popular Judaica Jewelry pieces and explain a little about the significance behind them. That way, when buying your next piece for yourself or for someone close, the purchase will be that bit more meaningful.

A very easily recognized and popular symbol is that of the Menorah. The Menorah was a seven-branched golden candelabrum in the Mishkan (the portable Sanctuary) that travelled with the Jewish people in their forty-year meander in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. Later, it was also to be found in the Temple in Jerusalem. The Menorah is therefore probably one of the oldest symbols of Judaism. Today the Menorah can be found on the coat of arms of the State of Israel.

Chai is both a symbol and Hebrew word that also enjoys must popularity in Jewish culture. Chai is a Hebrew word made up of two Hebrew letters, Chet and Yud. The word Chai translates to mean "living". Nowadays it has become associated with the expression of Jewish pride, "Am Yisrael Chai", meaning "The People of Israel Live". Essentially this word represents the survival, against all odds of the Jewish people throughout history. In the Hebrew alphabet, each letter has a numerological value. The combined value of the two letters that make up the word Chai is eighteen. Therefore it is customary in Judaism to donate money to charity in multiples of eighteen as charity is believed to save one from death.

The Star of David is known in Hebrew as Magen David. It is a much more recent symbol of Judaism. The Star of David is made up of two equilateral triangles, one pointing upwards and one downwards laid on top of each other. Only from about the seventeenth century did the Star of David come to be associated with Judaism. In the eighteenth century it was used in both secular and religious contexts. In the nineteenth century it became associated with the Zionist movement as symbolic of the Jewish people. Nowadays a blue Star of David adorns the flag of the State of Israel.

Pomegranates are very popular symbols in Judaica Jewelry, especially on pieces from Israel. Perhaps this is due to the fact that it is one of the Seven Species that Israel is blessed with that are listed in the book of Deuteronomy. Furthermore, legend has it that there are 613 seeds in a pomegranate. Therefore, Jewish people adorn themselves with jewelry of this form in the hope that they can merit to live lives filled with G-d's commandments.
