The literal translation of the Hebrew word Mezuzah is doorpost. There are different examples of this in the Torah. One is when speaking about sprinkling the blood of the Passover sacrifice on the doorpost as the Jewish people were about to leave Egypt, the word Mezuzahs (actually 'mezuzot') is used .
Yet the word Mezuzah became associated with the Mitzvah of placing the parchment scroll on the doorpost. Recently with advent of fancy cases for the scrolls, people began confusing the scroll with the container. That is why you will find articles on our website clarifying that in the context of this Mitzvah "Mezuzah" is the scroll, not the container.
